The singer, 33, John Legend, asked the hand of his longtime girlfriend, model Chrissy Teigen's, 26.
Legend, Newcomer of the Year Grammy in 2006 and Teigen, among other beauty posing for Victoria's Secret, share their lives since 2007.
The news was confirmed to People by the spokesman for the singer: "John Legend and his girlfriend model Chrissy Teigen got engaged while on vacation that took place in the Maldives."
The festivities will last only a short time because Legend is on stage in Las Vegas at the Palms Hotel, to celebrate the New Year.
John Legend has won five Grammy Awards in his career, making him one of the important figures of R & B during the 2000s in the United States.
